Statement of intent feedback and LR:
Mark: 3
Grade: D
Comments for AQA:
- This statement of intent offers a clear original artist concept and some interesting ideas for a music video and magazine that will meet the brief. The basics are all here but without offering reference to media language and particularly representation required for the higher levels. It largely targets the specified audience but perhaps needs further justification in terms of the ‘mainstream’ element of audience outlined in brief.
- Media language elements are considered in places – good for locations but lacking in terms of other aspects of media language. Narrative mentioned briefly but not with the detail or analysis required for the higher levels.
- Representation is not addressed in this statement which is the key weakness that keeps it to the lower levels.
- Audience is addressed reasonably effectively but needs more discussion in terms of brief and idea of ‘mainstream’. Also lacking the detail and theory that could push this to the higher levels.
- Digital convergence is not fully understood – more reference to industry contexts and convergence required to move this into level 3+.
- Print element of brief is addressed with interesting concept but lacking specific details for the top levels.
Feedback:
- There is the basis of a solid statement here but also a few things we need to add for the next draft.
- For Media language, your section on locations is good but you need to offer that detail and explanation for much more – camera shots, costume, editing, visual style, post-production or effects… the list goes on. You don’t need to cover everything but you need more than what you’ve got currently. For each element, always make sure you are explaining why: What connotations are you trying to create? What will you communicate to the audience?
- For narrative, you briefly introduce this but don’t really offer anything more – is there is a resolution? Is there a performance element? Are they combined or separate? Lots to make clear.
- Audience is solid but needs more explanation in terms of the brief and particularly the ‘mainstream’ element. I think it can work but you need to justify it.
- Representation is the key weakness – you haven’t covered this at all. What stereotypes will you use or subvert? What theories can you apply? There should be real potential considering your artist and the theorists we have studied recently.
- Print brief is addressed briefly - go back to this in January to add specific details when you have done the print research and planning tasks.
- Digital convergence – look at this again and perhaps combine in a section on industry too.
Next steps:
- Copy and paste this feedback to your Media 2 coursework blog with the title ‘Statement of Intent feedback and learner response’.
- As your learner response, pick out the three improvements/changes you need to make to your Statement of Intent before producing a final draft.
- Re-draft your statement of intent using Microsoft Word / Google Docs – you may wish to do this after Christmas when we have completed research and planning for the print element of the brief.
- Include more detail throughout any sections
- Include representations section and include industry too.
- Explain and justify how my audiences section reaches the brief by explain how the industry is transitioning to mainstream.
