'Film Industry assessment learner response
Feedback from teacher:
WWW: Q3 shows some engagement with the question and CSP. overall though this is a lesson in revision and preparation
EBI: some basic errors in Q1+Q2: suggests lack of revision. This is the easiest assessment to revise for (one CSP, one key concept) so that is a little worrying.
LR: see blog.
Self feedback:
Question 1: 2/3- The reason why I lost a mark is because I wrote FFBC instead of BBFC.
Question 2 : 2/6- One strategy 1 I said a good promotion strategy was production through New Line and saying they could have advertised on social media. However this is not a promotion strategy instead I could have said:
Traditional marketing: film poster, trailer, review quotes etc.
Social media: Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc.
Music / existing fans of Bruce Springsteen
Question 3:5/9- In this question I missed out on not linking back to theorists such as David Hesmonglaph
Question 2 improvement:
One strategy that I could have used is the director power of Gurinder Chadha. This is because the success of Bend It Like Beckham, people would have thought that Blinded By the light would have been a hit as well therefore this being an overall good promotion strategy.
Question 3 improvement:
Blinded By The Light cost $15m to make – money raised between Bend It Films (huge success with Bend It Like Beckham), Levantine Films (huge success with Hidden Figures) and Ingenious Media investment company. Given that Gurinder Chadha decided to broaden their audience with the already established name New line productions, this would have not helped them because now they have to give a percentage of their profits to new line productions. Blinded by the light only made $18.1 million. When you minus the money to New line productions Gurinder Chadha would hardly have any money left. However because no one will know if the movie would ever make a decent profit or not, you can not decide at the time if you had made a good decision or not.
Furthermore Gurinder Chadha operates through creating films with the profits of the last films, this film not generating enough income would mean that she could not create another film with a higher budget.
However , this is also a risky business because you never know when competitors are going to release films, Blinded by the light was released too close to a movie called 'Yesterday' is what some industry figures believe. This was an another British comedy that was far more successful at the box office.
