Mise-en-scene video feedback and learner response
Feedback from Mr Halsey:
- This is a really good choice of clip – very achievable to recreate. Actor placement, movement and expression is a major part of mise-en-scene and your performance is good in this regard – the body language matches the original clip pretty well. I’m not so sure on Obaida’s accent however!
- I can see how you’ve tried to match the location for mise-en-scene but I wonder if you could have found somewhere a little closer to the original – particularly for the shot of the jacket hanging up.
- One major EBI is to do with camerawork and in particular shot framing. If you look at your shots side-by-side to the original you’ll find a lot of dead space above Obaida’s head whereas in the original the top of Jackie Chan’s hair is actually cut off. Over-the-shoulder shots are very difficult to frame so this is a good lesson for the future.
- Although the task was mise-en-scene, another big learning point is audio levels and background noise. You need to make sure it is smooth and doesn’t have anything to confuse or distract the audience
Self assessment:
WWW: We got all the lines correct and chose a good setting. Furthermore I paid good observation to the little things such as starting the frame with my hand on the jacket for 1/2 a second.
Ebi: Camera placement. I struggled with exactly matching up the frame and the characters as we had to film on a tripod. Furthermore I should've payed more attention to the background noise.
Reflection:
In more detail. I planned my script by writing it out beforehand. This would be easier because everyone knew what to say at the right time. I also created videos where the position of the camera would change. This would help us because we would know where every camera angle was.
Improvement for the future:
In the future i will improve stuff like background noise. This is because in this video you can hear a woman shouting at her dog and you can hear other background stuff that is there which was not in the original video. Furthermore I will work on to improve my filming and positioning of the characters. This is because in the original video there was not anywhere where a whole frame was wasted and on my recreation there was parts where half the frame was wasted.
Importance of Mise en Scene in film and language:
I have learnt that mise en scene has a big importance in film and language. The particular reason for this opinion is because mise en scene allows the audience to understand the media producers intentions. Little things like lighting can help understand that the atmosphere may have changed. Furthermore mise en scene is all little things however without these little things the final product would not be as good as it can be. Therefore mise en scene is important as it allows producers to reach their full potential.
